Useful Resources

On this page we have developed brief notes on some practical and useful problem solving methods and techniques. Please feel free to print them, use them and distribute them providing the documents are not modified in any way.

Classical Brainstorming

The good old favourite. If in doubt have a brainstorm session! Read the notes to see if you know the important aspects to this gneral purpose technique, and why in some situations it may not be so helpful.

Nominal Group Technique

Again a fairly common technique based on brainstorming, but overcoming some of it's limitations.

5W+H

A deceptively simple questioning technique to help get the right information to begin solving a problem.

50 Preliminary Questions

Expanding upon the 5W's, a great tool for gathering specific information about a problem situation. This is useful for overcoming the often typical approach of gathering data in a cursory manner.

Implementation Checklist

So you've developed the perfect project plan? Test it against these questions and see whether you could improve it.

Assumption Surfacing

As individuals, every time we look at a particular situation we tend to do so using a set of in-built personal assumptions which forms part of our view of how the world 'works'. In a problem solving situation these assumptions may interfere with our ability to effectively identify appropriate solutions. Use this technique to identify what perspective you typically adopt.
